Verses 5-6 “5And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.
6And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.”It was our Lord’s disciples who requested that He increase their faith, which tells us that even those who are closest to the Lord sometimes feel that their faith is small and inadequate. True biblical faith is one of the most misunderstood things in the Christian life. Sometimes it is incorrectly believed that real faith is simply deciding that we want something (a provision, an out-come, or a healing) and then manufacturing the belief (by concentrating real hard) that things will turn out as we want them. Such is not biblical faith at all. We can not force God to do anything by working up the belief that it is going to happen. True faith comes from believing what God has already said in His Word. “Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17). Don’t base your faith on a dream or on something you think God said to you in your prayer life, for God gives no new revelations. Base your faith only on what God has said in the Bible. God must be the object of our faith, and it is not how much faith we have but the object of our faith that is all important. We must have our faith in Him, His attributes, His promises, and His words. We need only a little faith when our faith is in Him.
