And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.
And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.
And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.
And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.”This Scripture says that when God sends ministers they must be empowered by Him. Without him, ministers can accomplish nothing, and ministers should remember that there is no cause to boast about any good that is accomplished by their preaching since it is God’s grace that causes the good, not the minister’s industry and ingenuity.
This Scripture also says that when God sends His men to minister to us, we should care for them in a good way. Ministers should not have to pay for their own expenses in the ministry. Paul said that a soldier does not go to war at his own expense (I Cor 9:7). So, God’s ministers were told to take nothing for their journey because those who preach the gospel should be cared for by those to whom they preach. When fellow believers do not care for their ministers, and care well for them, it is a testimony against them. There are churches that do not believe in paying their pastors, and while we understand that there can be some good motivation for this, it is evident from this passage (and many others) that it is a misguided belief.
