Verses 46-49 “46And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
47Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
48He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
49But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.”
If we call Jesus Lord, then we should do what He says, and if we say we love Jesus, we should behave like Christians. Only when we do what He says can we hope to have a stable and unshakable life.
The foundation rock in verse 48 corresponds to Jesus, our Rock. Our lives must be founded upon Him. The KJV is better than other versions in its translation of this verse. Leaving out the rock and giving credit to such things as “well built” (NASV, NIV, RSV), “properly built” (Phillips), or “soundly built” (NEB) puts the emphasis on man’s work instead of upon the Rock, Christ Jesus.
