Verse 6 “And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.”
“The days were accomplished” is a notable phrase. It reminds us of three things. First, that Mary carried her Baby for thirty-nine weeks. It was nine months for her to love her Lord as no one else could, nine months for her to rejoice in her Savior. Now, it would be on to the next work that God had for Mary, that of loving, protecting, and nourishing her Lord.
Second. “the days were accomplished” reminds us that God’s appointed time had arrived to bring the Christ into the world. It was not a moment too late, nor a moment too soon. History had waited for this moment since the the fall of man in Eden. Now, the Holy Spirit had prepared a body for the Son of God (Heb 10:5), and it was time for the great, longed-for event.
Third, “the days were accomplished” reminds us that God has a right time for everything. He controls events and times. There is a time on God’s calender for the Second Advent as there was for the First Advent. We do not know the day nor the hour. But we know that His promises are certain and when the days are accomplished, He will surely come.
