Matthew 27:9-10 “Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; And gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me.”
The words of Jeremiah quoted here were SPOKEN by Jeremiah the prophet, but were not WRITTEN in his book. The only way we would know that Jeremiah SPOKE these words is that Matthew tells us so. This is more evidence for the inspiration of God’s Words in the Bible, truly a Miracle Book.
FURTHER NOTE: Matthew did not make a mistake, as some have suggested; nor have the Hebrew and Greek texts been corrupted, as others have said. Some say that Matthew mistakenly attributed to Jeremiah words that are found in Zachariah’s prophecy. However, the exact words quoted here are not found in either Jeremiah’s book nor in Zachariah’s book. While it is a possibility that the words are paraphrased from, or alluded to in Jeremiah 18, 19 or 32; or in Zechariah 11:12-13, it is more likely that the words were SPOKEN by Jeremiah, rather than WRITTEN. After all, Matthew says these words were “spoken by Jeremiah the prophet.” He did not use the words “it is written,” as He often did. This is further evidence for the verbal inspiration of God’s words, and proves that the Bible is entirely accurate.
