Matthew 20:11-16 “And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.”

Whenever economic matters are discussed in the Bible, we find God approving of what we would call free market principles; such as, freedom to hire, freedom to sell ones labor and goods, and freedom to make a profit. The problem in every system and situation in life is that the depraved human nature wants to take over with its greed, laziness, and selfishness. Even believers spend too much time looking at the situation of other people, comparing themselves to others to make sure that they are being treated “fairly.” There is only one question that we need ask ourselves–“Am I doing what I am supposed to do according to God’s Word?”

Of course, the above passage is about serving the Lord. It is a great privilege to serve Him, what ever He calls us to do, and no matter how others may be rewarded. Many are called to serve Him, but few are chosen. It is a great privilege to be chosen. We did not deserve to be chosen.
