Verses 16-20 “16Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
17And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.
18And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.
19And when he had gone a little farther thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.
20And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.”
The first of Jesus’ disciples to be called were fishers. They were common people, not highly educated, not from a high station in society. God wants believers from every strata of society to serve Him. We do not have to come from a rich family or from “the right side of the tracks.” We do not have to be self-made nor reared with a silver spoon in our mouths. God is able to “make” us to be what He wants us to be. He said to Peter and Andrew, “Come ye after me, and I will make you…” He is able to make us fishers of men and good servants for the Lord God. It is simply ours to follow Him.
