Matthew 9:33-38 “And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel. But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils. And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.”
Jesus was doing a great work. He was teaching and preaching the gospel and healing every kind of sickness and disease (though not necessarily every person who was sick). Even though He was doing only good, His critics said that He was of the Devil. At least part of the Lord’s motivation was the fact that the unsaved were living aimless, purposeless lives, without any direction from a shepherd. Human nature is such that we need a Shepherd, and without Him to guide us, we will run here and there, without purpose or plan.
God wants those of us who know Him to help Him to give people something worth living for. Real laborers are few in His harvest fields. Will we be laborers with Him today? Will we pray that God will motivate us to work for Him?
