2For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount.
3And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;
4Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.
5Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
6And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.”
Moses was a mediator between the people of Israel and the LORD. This taught that a mediator would always be necessary. Today, there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus (I Tim.2:5). And Moses was to give to the people the exact words (“These are the words,” not “these are the thoughts”) which God gave him. Moses was not supposed to “put God’s words into his own words,” he was just to deliver the words that God gave to him.
It should be noticed, in Verse 3, that Israel and the House of Jacob (Jews) are the same people, with these terms being used interchangeably and synonymously in Scripture, though originally the term “Jew” referred only to the descendants of the tribe of Judah. Here Israel is all one kingdom of priests and one holy nation (v.6). This refutes many modern false theories.
