Matthew 3:11  John the Baptist preached, “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me [Jesus] is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:”

John prophesied the baptism of the Holy Spirit, a baptism that Jesus would accomplish for the first time ever, on the Day of Pentecost. Jesus would accomplish this baptism in the sense that He sent the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit proceeds from Him, also in the sense that Jesus and the Holy Spirit are one. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit should not be confused with the fullness of the Spirit; these are two entirely different operations of the Holy Spirit. The baptism of the Spirit places (buries) the believer, at the moment of his regeneration, into the body of Christ, which is the Church (see I Cor 12:13). The baptism of the Holy Spirit, a new thing at the beginning of the Church, proves that God has a special position for us in Christ.
